Anthony Swofford's "Jarhead" Story aired: Wednesday, March 05, 2003
Gung-ho, gripped by visions of glory, girls, and greasing the enemies of the United States of America, Anthony Swofford joined the U.S. Marines as soon as he legally could at the age of 17.
In 1991, he went to war in the first Gulf War, where he nearly died from unfriendly fire, from friendly fire, and inside a booby trapped Iraqi bunker.
Now, he's written a fierce book about all this called "Jarhead," a name that Marines are called and call themselves and what their heads in their short haircuts kind of look like.
