Jazz musician Charles Lloyd has been tuning in and tuning out of the music scene since the 1960s. Those were the days when the Charles Lloyd Quartet were at the top of the jazz scene, packing the hippies in at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, sharing the bill with the likes of Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead and playing at venues like the 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival. That live recording went on to become one of the first gold records in jazz.
The years since have mellowed Charles Lloyd. After the 1960s, he left the scene entirely living alone in Big Sur playing music for only a few close friends. But as time passed, Charles ended his solitude and today still packs the fans in at jazz clubs throughout the world.
For the past year, Charles Lloyd has been on the road promoting his latest CD "Lift Every Voice" and recently Here and Now producer April Peavey spoke with Charles Lloyd before a performance at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston.
