Cover detail from "Baking in America" by Greg Patent
Baking in America, and Freedom Toast
Story aired: Wednesday, March 12, 2003

The new book Baking in America chronicles the history of the precise culinary science starting with the first American cookbook written by Amelia Simmons in 1796 and ending with the contemporary Pilsbury bakeoff. Author Greg Patent spoke with Robin Young and presented one recipe from the book: Persimmon Walnut Bread.

These days, in some circles, there's just no love lost for the French. France's continuing refusal to stand with the U.S., Britain, and Spain to disarm Iraq by force has led to some harsh feelings. And now the war of words has turned into a food fight. Some lawmakers on Capitol Hill have re-named items on the menu in the four cafeterias that serve the House of Representatives. Today's French fries will be tomorrow's freedom fries. Joining us on the line is North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones, who brought the issue to Capitol Hill.

Guests:

Greg Patent, author of Baking in America

North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones
