Detail of "The Safety of Objects" movie poster
"The Safety of Objects"
Story aired: Friday, March 14, 2003

A white picket fence, lush green lawn, and a pristine two car garage. These images on screen tell us we're in suburbia. Todd Haynes took us there in "Far From Heaven," as did director Sam Mendes in "American Beauty." Now director Rose Troche brings us "The Safety of Objects," a new movie based on a book of short stories By A.M. Homes. In the film we meet four suburban families, their complicated lives connected by a single tragic event: a car accident that leaves Paul Gold, a handsome teenage boy, in a coma. His mother, Ester, played by Glenn Close, enters a local radio contest to win back the love of her surviving child, Julie.

Eric Schaefer joins us along with Renee Graham, pop culture writer for the Boston Globe. Our guest reviewer this week is Dr. Phillip Freeman, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst with a practice in Newton, Massachusetts.
