The Fate of Kurds in a Post-Saddam Iraq Story aired: Thursday, March 20, 2003
For millions of Iraqi Kurds in the country's north, the war now unleashed against Saddam Hussein means the best chance yet that a hated tyrant will be brought down.
If Iraq's government does fall, many fear turmoil in Northern Iraq, semi-autonomous since after the first Gulf War. Kurds have had a taste of independence, but Turkey has made it clear if Kurds move on the rich oil fields of Kirkuk, they would be met with force.
As for old dreams of greater Kurdish independence, even dreams of a nation state, the U.S. has said that will not be allowed to happen.
