U.S. Marines on the move alongside the main road to Baghdad in central Iraq (AP)
March Towards Baghdad Slows
Story aired: Wednesday, March 26, 2003

It's the sixth day of fighting on the ground in Iraq. Coalition troops continue to make their way towards Baghdad. Soldiers in the south are encountering high winds and sandstorms, and others closer to the capital city are battling through rain.

Overnight there were many developments on the front, including reports of an uprising in the city of Basra, of Republican Guard movement south of Baghdad, a discovery of thousands of chemical suits abandoned by Iraqi forces, and a deadly missile strike on an Iraqi neighborhood.

Brigadier General Vincent Brooks spoke more generally during a briefing today at U.S. Central Command in Doha, Qatar:

"Operations are ongoing...we have forces that are arrayed throughout all of Iraq at this point and so if you are someone in the regime wondering where it's going to come from the answer is it's going to come from everywhere. I'm not going to put very specific terms on exactly what thrusts, exactly what unit, it's just not prudent for us to do that."
