Donald Rumsfeld (AP)
Secretary Rumsfeld Warns Syria, Iran
Story aired: Monday, March 31, 2003

Where could the Bush administration's war against terror turn its attention once the war with Iraq is over? Or even while it's ongoing?

Recent remarks by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld have people talking about Iran and Syria.

Rumsfeld said late last week that if reports of Syria sending night vision goggles to Iraq turned out to be true, he would consider the action hostile.

And he said he would also consider Iran hostile, if Iraqi Shiite fighters supported by Iran interfered with coalition troops.

Secretary of State Colin Powell, speaking before the American Israel Public Affairs Council (AIPAC), had this to say:

"Syria can continue direct support for terrorist groups and the dying regime of Saddam Hussein, or it can embark on a different and more hopeful course...either way, Syria bears the responsibility for its choices and its consequences."

Professor Shibley Telhami discusses U.S. attitudes towards Syria and Iran.

Guests:

Shibley Telhami, Anwar Sadat Professor at the University of Maryland and author of "The Stakes: America in the Middle East."
