Kuwait Red Crescent distributes food (AP)
Humanitarian Efforts in Iraq
Story aired: Tuesday, April 01, 2003

We began our program today with a discussion of the difficulties of winning hearts and minds in Iraq.

Critical to that will be getting humanitarian aid in the forms of food, water, shelter, and medical care to Iraqis.

Yesterday, British troops pumped clean drinking water to more than a quarter million people in Iraq's south. Although the effort was crucial, international aid workers say it was a drop in the bucket since as many as 26 million people could eventually need help in Iraq.

Aid workers need supplies and safe passage to move them to avoid a humanitarian disaster.

Guests:

Catrin Schulte-Hillen, program director for Doctors Without Borders.
