Secretary of State Colin Powell (AP)
Powell Meets in Turkey
Story aired: Tuesday, April 01, 2003

Turkish farmers threw stones at U.S. soldiers over the weekend in two separate incidents in the country's southeast. All too fitting an image, perhaps - for the state of U.S.-Turkish relations at the moment.

The Americans had come to retrieve one of three cruise missiles that slammed into rural Turkey. The missiles didn't explode but local people did, furious that the missiles fired from ships in the Mediterranean had veered off-course.

Secretary of State Colin Powell is flying to Turkey today in a brief visit to try to get things back on track.

Guests:

Jonny Dymond, the BBC.
