Writing from Gulf War I Story aired: Monday, April 07, 2003
War is horrifying, sometimes morally ambiguous, and the stuff of great books.
Of the many great examples of war literature, think of Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead, " "Catch 22" by Joseph Heller, Tim O'Brien's Vietnam-era, "The Things They Carried," and "Rumors of War" by Philip Caputo.
But what stories have come out of more modern conflicts? How have the stories of war been told post-Vietnam? Here and Now's literary correspondent Steve Almond is in the studio with a few books in hand.
Steve Almond recommends:
"The Pearl of Kuwait" by Tom Paine "Baghdad Express" by Joel Turnipseed "Dear Mr. President" by Gabe Hudson
