Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz (AP)
Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz
Story aired: Tuesday, April 08, 2003

President Bush calls him "Wolfie." Others call him Wolfowitz of Arabia.

Some say Paul Wolfowitz, the number two man at the Pentagon, is the most powerful deputy secretary of defense ever. After the first Gulf War he authored the neoconservative policy of preemption, striking first at rogue nations. That policy has become the hallmark of the current president's world strategy.

His critics, like Michael Lind of the New America Foundation, call Wolfowitz the real power at the Pentagon.

So who is Paul Wolfowitz? David Gergen, who served in the Reagan and Clinton administrations and who now teaches at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, joins us to discuss the life and work of Paul Wolfowitz.

Guests:
