Cuba Cracks Down on Dissidents
Story aired: Monday, April 14, 2003

As the world watched the whirlwind in Iraq in recent weeks, an ill wind blew in Cuba.

In a fierce crackdown on dissidents on Friday, three members of a gang that hijacked a Cuban ferry were executed by firing squad, just three days after being put on trial.

Just before that, 75 dissidents were given jail terms of six to 28 years for allegedly conspiring with the United States.

Guests:

Stephen Gibbs, BBC reporter.
