Detail, "Iraqi Poetry Today"
Iraqi Poetry
Story aired: Monday, April 28, 2003

Even through the decades Saddam Hussein intimidated and silenced so many in Iraq, poets continued to write and keep their faith in the transformative power of words.

Iraqi poets created works of beauty and passion now made accessible to English readers in a new book, "Iraqi Poetry Today," which collects the work of 40 contemporary Iraqi poets, most of whom wrote in exile.

To guide us through the new anthology, Here and Now speaks with the editor, Professor Saadi Simawe, from his office at Grinnell University in Iowa. Also on the line from her home just outside of Detroit is Dunya Mikhail, one of the new book's contributing poets.

Guests:

Professor Saadi Simawe, editor, "Iraqi Poetry Today"

Dunya Mikhail, poet.
