Detail, "The Killer Strain" by Marilyn Thompson
Marilyn Thompson's "The Killer Strain"
Story aired: Wednesday, April 30, 2003

Bob Stevens was a 63-year-old photo editor in Florida. Thomas Morris and Joseph Curseen were postal workers in Washington, DC. Kathy Nguyen lived alone in the Bronx, and Ottilie Lundgren, a 94-year-old widow, died in hospital in Connecticut.

These were the five deaths in the anthrax attacks of 2001. Others were infected but lived to tell the tale.

A year and a half later, the case is unsolved, the chief suspect not charged, and whether or not America is any better prepared for the next attack is still in question.

Marilyn Thompson is the author of "The Killer Strain: Anthrax and a Government Exposed." She joins Here and Now to talk about her research on the anthrax scare of 2001.
