"Road Map" Dealt Blow
Story aired: Monday, May 19, 2003

The fifth suicide bombing since Saturday night in Israel now savages hope for progress in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Over the weekend, for the first time in 3 years, there was a summit between the two sides, when Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met with the new Palestinian Prime Minister, Mahmoud Abbas.

When the bombs started to go off, Sharon postponed his trip to Washington to discuss the current peace plan, the so-called "road map, " which is supposed to lead, among other things, to a Palestinian state in two years.

Few right now would count on that timetable.

Greg Myre, New York Times Reporter in Jerusalem, joins Here and now to discuss prospects for peace.
