Sundance Channel Explores the Culture of Islam
Story aired: Monday, May 19, 2003

Nowadays, news headlines often reference places that would otherwise only be familiar to Americans from fading national geographic magazines. Names like Kandahar, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan are just a few of these examples.

In a new series of documentaries, filmmaker Taran Davies travels to the Caucasus, to Afghanistan, and to Tajikistan along the Silk Road, chronicling the cultures that most westerners can only hope to read about.

His films air starting tonight on the Sundance Channel as part of a series called "Portraits of Islam," and Davies joins Here and Now to discuss his projects.

Guests:

Taran Davies, filmmaker.
