Movie Poster, "Owning Mahowny"
Owning Mahowny
Story aired: Friday, May 23, 2003

Gambling can be a very expensive habit. Ask William Bennett, who reportedly lost $8 million over 10 years. It can also be an obsession that will destroy you.

"Owning Mahowny" is not about the casual high roller. Rather, it's a character study of a gambling addict starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

"Mahowny" is based on the true story of Toronto banker Brian Molony. In the 1980's he managed to siphon $10.2 million from his company to cover his ballooning gambling debts. His story was told in Gary Stephen Ross' 1984 book, "Stung: The Incredible Obsession of Brian Molony," and now it's in theaters as "Owning Mahowny."

Here and Now film reviewer Renee Graham joins addiction specialist Marilyn Feinberg to talk about the film.

Guests:

Renee Graham, film reviewer.

Marilyn Feinberg, addiction specialist.
