G8 and Demographics
Story aired: Monday, June 02, 2003

As the richest countries meet in France, population experts say they should be paying more attention to demographics.

For instance, it takes the 15 European nations combined one year to achieve the population growth India achieves in six days.

Some experts say that when wealthy countries face shrinking populations, it can threaten their very future.

Joseph Chamie, Director of the Population Division at the United Nations joins Here and Now to discuss why countries with more money and less birthrate or immigration are in crisis.
