Executive Editor, Managing Editor Resign from NYT Story aired: Thursday, June 05, 2003
The two top editors at the New York Times resigned in the wake of a scandal that's placed the paper under unprecedented scrutiny, and it's editors under unprecedented criticism.
Executive Editor Howell Raines and Managing Editor Gerald Boyd stepped down, following revelations last month that reporter Jayson Blair had fabricated stories and sources and consistently lied about his whereabouts.
New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger told Times staffers at a morning meeting that "this is a day that breaks my heart."
Joseph Lelyveld, who used to have Raines's job, has been named interim executive editor.
Bob Steele, director of ethics at the Poynter Institute, joins Here and Now to discuss the resignations.
