PBS Presents "Bloodlines: Technology Hits Home"
Story aired: Tuesday, June 10, 2003

Several years ago, Luanne Buzzanca was married and trying to have a baby. She and her husband John tried everything to conceive. They finally hired a surrogate to carry a baby for them.

Shortly before the baby's birth, Luanne's husband filed for divorce and claimed there had been no children from the marriage. But in fact, little Jaycee actually had five sort-of parents: the egg donor, the sperm donor, the surrogate and her husband, and Luanne. The one person with no biological connection to the baby was the only one who wanted the responsibility of raising her.

Luanne's story, and the legal and ethical dilemmas it brings to life, is one of several told in "Bloodlines," a new documentary airing tonight on PBS.

Guests:

Noel Schwerin, filmmaker, "Bloodlines."
