U.N. Votes on U.S. Exemption from ICC Story aired: Thursday, June 12, 2003
U.S. diplomats are expected to take heat at the U.N. today for the Bush administration stance on the International Criminal Court.
The court was established last year to prosecute crimes against humanity, but President Bush backed away from the treaty, saying the court would prompt political witch hunts. The U.S. won a one-year exemption from prosecution for U.S. citizens involved in U.N. peacekeeping missions. The Security Council is expected to pass another year-long exemption today, but not without debate and dissent.
