Cover Detail, "Smart Mobs" by Howard Rheingold
Smart Mobs
Story aired: Friday, July 11, 2003

"Smart Mobs" is a short phrase that describes the intersection of computers, cell phones, pagers, and people, now being used for everything from organizing protests to running political campaigns to terror strikes.

Supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean have used smart mobbing, organizing themselves online and then meeting in person. Dean's campaign has also relied on the internet to raise money: two thirds of his funds were raised online.

The man who coined the term and who wrote a book by the same name is Howard Rheingold, and he joins Here and Now to discuss smart mobbing.
