Commander Says U.S. Troops Face Guerrilla Campaign
Story aired: Thursday, July 17, 2003

The new commander of allied forces in Iraq says American troops there are facing a "classical guerrilla type campaign."

The words of General John P. Abizaid contradicted those of Donald Rumsfeld, who last week said "this is not a guerilla war." The comments also come as another audiotape surfaced, purportedly of Saddam Hussein, denouncing Iraq's new governing council.

Perhaps one reason for the increased rhetoric is that today is the July 17, formerly one of the most important holidays for the Iraqi Baath Party, perhaps second only to Saddam's birthday, and one of six Baath holidays outlawed last week by Iraq's new council.
