Book cover detail, "Corporate Warriors"
Corporate Warriors
Story aired: Friday, July 25, 2003

The United States continues to resist sending U.S. troops into chaotic and tragic Liberia. However, a private, Anglo-American military company called Northbridge Services has offered to send in its soldiers -- who are literally hired guns -- to arrest Liberian President Charles Taylor.

The soldiers are mercenaries, a term with dark connotations for many, but such private armies are increasingly being enlisted by the U.S. Military. An estimated 1 in 10 of all troops in Iraq come from private military contractors.

Peter W. Singer has been following this trend toward private armies for years. He's written a new book called "Corporate Warriors: The Rise of the Privatized Military Industry."

Guests:

Peter W. Singer, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and author, "Corporate Warriors."
