Mutinous soldiersin the Philippines, July 27, 2003 (AP)
Officials Say Philippines Mutiny Part of Larger Plot
Story aired: Thursday, July 31, 2003

Philippine President Gloria Arroyo said today that the mutiny that took place in her country last weekend is far from over. A formal investigation begins today into what exactly the several hundred soldiers who took over a Manila shopping complex wanted.

Questions are also being raised about U.S. military presence in the area. The would-be mutineers claimed that top Philippine military officials staged bombings in Muslim areas of the Philippines, prompting concerns that the military assistance the U.S. is giving the Philippines is based on trumped-up evidence.

Paolo Pasicolan, policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC, joins Here and Now to discuss the situation in the Philippines.
