Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (AP)
Economist Magazine Challenges Berlusconi
Story aired: Tuesday, August 05, 2003

Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is no stranger to scandal. He is the country's richest man, and, if you believe the accusations made in many lawsuits and investigations that have dogged his career, he got there with bribes, manipulation of the country's courts, and a stranglehold on most of Italy's newspapers and television stations.

Berlusconi now holds the rotating presidency of the European Union and recent comments about German politicians have caused more controversy.

The Economist magazine recently published an open letter to Berlusconi, and mailed him a dossier with evidence, it says of his misdeeds.

Guests:

Bill Emmott, editor-in-chief of The Economist.
