Maher "Mike" Hawash (Family Handout)
Hawash Gets 8-10 Years for Taliban Work
Story aired: Friday, August 08, 2003

In March of this year, a computer engineer living in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon was arrested, put in jail, and held for five weeks without charges being filed. Mike Hawash's friends rallied around him. They set up a website. They held protest rallies. In late April, authorities accused the Palestinian-American of trying to get to Afghanistan to fight with the Taliban against the U.S.

Despite the charges, many of his supporters continued to believe in Hawash's innocence.

This week, Hawash pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiring to aid the Taliban and will face between eight and 10 years in prison.
