Democratic presidental candidates debate in Albuquerque (AP)
Democratic Debate Report Card
Story aired: Friday, September 05, 2003

Eight of the nine Democrats running for president met in their first major debate last night. Not in the room, but present on everyone's mind, was the Republican incumbent. There were no knockout blows, but all the candidates, including Missouri Congressman Dick Gephardt, won roars of approval for attacking President George W. Bush on his Iraq policy.

Confounding the pundits, the candidates refrained largely from attacking their own. Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman voiced one of the few attacks on the front runner, former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, criticizing him over trade policy. All candidates agreed on the need to improve economy and U.S. infrastructure.
