Healthy Lunches for Kids
Story aired: Wednesday, September 10, 2003

Many children get half their daily food intake from their school lunch. Most schools now offer programs with alternatives, like pizza, that don't have to adhere to government nutritional standards. Also, a recent study finds that many school lunches are not adhering to those standards anyway.

The result: school lunch is one of the culprits in an increase in obesity in kids. New York City officials say half of the city's elementary school age children are overweight or obese. Nationwide, the number of overweight kids has doubled in the last ten years.

So, what's a parent to do? Pack a lunch. But not just any lunch.

Food critic Scott Haas and Chef Kathy Gunst offer new trends for the lunch box set.

Guests:

Scott Haas, food critic

Kathy Gunst, chef and cookbook author.
