Matt Haimovitz "Bach: 6 Suites for Cello"
Cellist Matt Haimovitz
Story aired: Thursday, September 11, 2003

CBGB in New York City is one of those well-worn, music clubs where punk rock, rockabilly, sometimes college radio bands, find their audience. So what was cello virtuoso Matt Haimovitz doing there last year, playing Bach?

A teen prodigy, Matt Haimovitz made his debut in 1984 with the Israel Philharmonic, under the baton of Zubin Mehta. Since then, he's performed under James Levine and Seiji Ozawa and with the world's greatest orchestras. Today, in response to the terror of September 11th, Haimovitz begins a series of concerts, a continuation of last year's "Listening Room Tour" of small clubs, playing Bach, contemporary American compositions, and an American classic.

Here and Now producer Andrea Shea caught up with cellist Matt Haimovitz at his home in Northhampton, Massachusetts as he was getting ready for today's tour.
