Isabel Hits East Coast
Story aired: Thursday, September 18, 2003

Hurricane Isabel has made landfall, with the eye of the storm now hitting the outer banks of North Carolina, lashing the coastal barrier islands with top winds of 100 miles per hour.

Isabel was once a category five monster storm but now it's diminished enough to only a borderline category two storm, and enough for some North Carolinians to refer to it dismissively as "Izzy".

Still, in Washington, DC the federal government, schools and public transportation all shut down today.

The police chief in Virginia Beach, Virginia advised people who didn't evacuate to write their names on their arms in permanent marker for identification purposes, just in case.
