Rebuilding Beirut

It used to be called the Paris of the Mediterranean. Lebanon's capital Beirut was said to be everything a city built between the mountains and a beautiful sea should be: cosmopolitan, glamorous, and historic.

Then came the 15-year civil war, and when the war ended in 1990, the rebuilding. Billions of dollars have been spent.

Rising from the rubble of the buildings of Beirut are, in some cases, the rubble of the buildings of Beirut. Ruins of war made new by architect Bernard Khoury.

The creations of Khoury are sometimes disturbing. They are meant to be.
