Michelle Shocked in the Here and Now studio
Michelle Shocked
Story aired: Tuesday, September 23, 2003

Activist and musician Michelle Shocked was raised in a strict Mormon household in Texas, ran away from home at 16, put herself through college, hit the road again as a hardcore punk rocker with a Mohawk, a nose ring, and very strong political views.

She landed in a mental institution after being arrested at the Democratic convention in 1984, was later raped by another activist at an anti-cruise missile peace camp in Sicily, and became a star after a journalist recorded her singing around a campfire and released the scratchy tape, without her knowledge, in Britain. It was called "texas campfire tapes."

Now Michelle has shocked the industry. After dropping out to battle her record label, she's re-emerged with her entire back catalogue of music, and her own label, called Mighty Sound. Today, Michelle is releasing a re-mastered version of her 1988 debut studio album "Short, Sharp, Shocked."

Guests:

Michelle shocked, activist and musician.
