Hundreds of U.S. satellites now circle the globe, making possible modern war and peace. From decisions on where to bomb, to countless financial transactions, to simply predicting the weekend weather, this web of space hardware makes the U.S. powerful.

Now, China plans an aggressive new push into space, sending a man aloft as soon as next week, with many more Chinese satellites to follow.
