Book cover detail, "Hardcore Zen"
Hardcore Zen
Story aired: Friday, September 26, 2003

What is Zen?

Basically, it's a branch of Buddhism, the religion that emerged in Northern India, 2,500 years ago.

Zen emphasizes meditation as a way to look reality straight in the eye and find peace with the way things are.

Elusive and mystical, Zen can seem a bit "out there," like that famous Zen riddle, "what is the sound of one hand clapping?"

But when Here and Now recently asked thirty-something American Zen Buddhist Master Brad Warner what he thinks Zen is all about, he said it's very much "right here."

Guests:

Brad Warner, Zen master and author, "Harcore Zen."
