Cover detail, "Exit to Freedom" by Calvin C., Jr. Johnson
Exit to Freedom
Story aired: Monday, September 29, 2003

According to the Innocence Project based in New York, 138 men convicted of brutal crimes have subsequently been exonerated through DNA testing. Now, one such man is telling his story in book form.

Calvin Johnson, Jr. was the son of the first black state senator from Ohio, the wayward product of a strong middle class family. He was convicted of minor misdemeanors in the early 1980s, including an arrest for breaking and entering armed with a knife.

He was identified by a rape victim from a file picture and in 1983 sentenced to life in prison for rape. He spent 16 years behind bars and was freed 1999 after DNA testing ruled out the possibility of his guilt.

Calvin has written his story in a new book titled "Exit to Freedom."
