Neighbors Concerned Over Planned B.U. Biolab
Story aired: Friday, October 03, 2003

A new $1.5 billion biological agents research laboratory is slated to be built in the heavily populated South End of Boston. The so-called "Level 4" lab at Boston University Medical Center would house some of the deadliest germs and viruses known to mankind, including Anthrax, Small Pox, the Bubonic Plague and Ebola.

In San Antonio, Texas, a similar lab has been carrying out Level 4 research for 3 years, right next to Emory University, numerous fast food restaurants, and the 410 Highway.

Dr. Jean Patterson, chairman of the Department of Virology and Immunology at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, joins Here and Now to discuss the new lab.
