Iraq Council Opposes Turkish Troops
Story aired: Wednesday, October 08, 2003

It took months of hard lobbying by the United States to convince it's once-stalwart ally Turkey to send troops to Iraq, and yesterday, the Turkish parliament finally voted overwhelmingly to dispatch peacekeepers.

If the deal goes through, Turkey will be the first Muslim nation to contribute troops to the U.S. occupation and reconstruction of Iraq.

Bulent Aliriza, Director of the Turkey Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, joins Here and Now to discuss the ramifications of the Turkish Parliament's decision to send troops to Iraq.
