Senate Votes to Ban Type of Abortion
Story aired: Wednesday, October 22, 2003

Both sides are squaring off in what's sure to be a continued abortion rights battle,
after the U.S. Senate voted yesterday to ban a procedure opponents call "partial birth abortion," but which is known medically as intact dilation and extraction, or "D and X."

President Bush has said he looks forward to signing the legislation. Abortion rights supporters immediately promised to take the new law all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court if need be, to the same justices who three years ago struck down a similar ban on the practice in Nebraska.

Guests:

Dr. Leroy Carhart, abortion advocate who fought the Nebraska ban

Douglas Johnson , the legislative director of the National Right to Life Movement.
