Ahmad Shawkat was a biology professor and writer in Iraq. After the fall of Saddam Hussein, he began an independent newspaper called "Without Direction." Shawkat accompanied WBUR Reporter Michael Goldfarb for 3 weeks during the war in Iraq, and became the subject of the Inside Out Documentary "Ahmad's War."

He had fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing for an independent newspaper when he was killed Tuesday outside his office in Mosul.
