Groups React to Gay Bishop Consecration
Story aired: Monday, November 03, 2003

There was thundering choral music and a standing ovation, as well as protests and the threat of schism, as the Episcopal Church consecrated its first openly gay bishop yesterday in New Hampshire.

The elevation of the Reverend Gene Robinson will be viewed as a victory by many gay and lesbian Christians, but it infuriates many conservative Christians.

The Episcopal Church is the U.S. branch of the 70 million member worldwide Anglican Communion, and today church leaders in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda moved to distance themselves from the New Hampshire diocese.

Guests:

Raquel Maria Dillon, New Hampshire Public Radio.
