Veteran Parades Missing Troops
Story aired: Monday, November 10, 2003

November 11, 2003 should be an especially significant Veterans Day, with so many active U.S. troops deployed overseas. The irony is that, in a year when so many American's want to honor soldiers, there may not be enough to go around.

The U.S. has 131,600 troops deployed in Iraq. The Army is said to be stretched so thin that even the Old Guard, the soldiers who stand vigil at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, will be deployed abroad for the first time since the Vietnam War.

Many Veteran's Day parades have been scaled back or canceled, with some cities calling on the Boy Scouts and other youth organizations to fill in the gap.

Guests:

Russ Geyer, Army veteran who heads the parade committee in Miami Lakes, Miami.
