The Kirov Ballet
Kirov Ballet
Story aired: Thursday, November 13, 2003

Monsters, fairies, a firebird, harem girls, and more than two centuries of dance history: the famed Kirov Ballet of St. Petersburg, Russia has been carrying plenty of historic, and actual baggage as the troupe tours the world.

They're in Boston this week, bringing three classic Russian ballets to the stage. They are "Chopiniana," a plotless dance of fairies dressed in flowing white, "Scheherazade, " the story of the Arabian nights, and the magical "Firebird" about the mythical firebird.

Magic on the stage is one thing. The hard work of unseen hundreds is quite another. Here and Now's Lynn Menegon went backstage as the Kirov rolled into town, and found that magic begins in the dressing room.
