Vladimir Putin (AP)
European Watchdog Questions Russian Elections
Story aired: Monday, December 08, 2003

A landslide for one political party in Russia this weekend, the United Russia Party, was really a triumph for one man, President Vladimir Putin.

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, no party has won anywhere close to the 37 percent of parliament United Russia won, and arguably no leader has ever had as much support and power as Putin.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which was monitoring the election, today said the elections were a step backwards on the road to democracy.

Guests:

Richard Chambers, chief advisor on the OSCE's observer mission for the Russian elections.
