Cover detail, "Tibet, Tibet: A Personal History of a Lost Land" by Patrick French
Tibet, Tibet
Story aired: Wednesday, December 10, 2003

There is more than one Tibet. There's the region in the Himalayas that was invaded and occupied by China in 1950. Since then, as many as a million Tibetans have died in guerilla war, in uprisings, in prison, and in labor camps. That is also where Tibet's ancient culture and Buddhist faith have been suppressed by the Chinese government and strained by modern culture.

The second Tibet is a kind of paradise, a Tibet of the mind, a spiritual Shangri-La embodied by Tibet's spiritual and temporal leader, the Dalai Lama.

In his new book, "Tibet, Tibet: A Personal History of a Lost Land," Patrick French explores both Tibets. He has traveled extensively in the region and also probed the west's fascination with the image of Tibet.
