Why We Went Orange
Story aired: Wednesday, January 07, 2004

More information emerges about security concerns that have kept the nation's threat status at orange for 18 days now. Officials in Europe are searching for a man who failed to show up for his Paris to Los Angeles flight on Christmas Eve. He is reportedly carrying a small bomb.

Also, the Washington Post reports that nuclear scientists were dispatched to college bowl games and New Year's Eve celebrations last week with radiation-detection equipment hidden in briefcases and golf bags, to sniff for dirty bombs.

All of this raises questions about whether measures taken to boost homeland security can ever be effective.
