Farmed Salmon Higher in PCB's, Study Says
Story aired: Friday, January 09, 2004

Salmon from salmon farms, the fish that's appearing more and more often on American dinner plates, has been found to contain high levels of potentially cancer-causing chemicals.

This is the fish once heralded as a healthy way to eat, and as a cheaper, environmentally friendly alternative to wild salmon.

But a study published today in the journal "Science" recommends that consumers in some regions limit their consumption of farmed salmon to less than one meal a month.

Guests:

Ronald Hites, Indiana University professor who led the new study.
