Shiite Leader Calls for Iraq Elections
Story aired: Monday, January 12, 2004

Despite the best efforts of the U.S. authorities in Iraq to win him over, Iraq's most powerful Shiite cleric dug his heels in this weekend and repeated his call for direct elections in June. The U.S. wants indirect elections instead, saying the country won't be ready for full, direct elections.

Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani is seen as a moderate and has consistently called for Iraqis to accept the American invasion and overthrow of the Baathist regime.
