Rep. James Clyman of South Carolina
South Carolina's Clyburn
Story aired: Wednesday, January 28, 2004

It would be hard to find a more wooed politician in the country right now than Representative Jim Clyburn of South Carolina. His endorsement is the fondest wish of each Democrat running for president in advance of South Carolina's primary next Tuesday.

Forty-five delegates are at stake there. Maybe even more importantly, a win in the state will indicate a candidate's ability to attract minority voters. Half of South Carolina's Democratic voters are African American.

Congressman Clyburn is the state's senior African American politician. Since 1992, he's represented his state's sixth congressional district, where about half the voters are minorities. The congressman tends to win his elections by landslides.

Rep. Richard Clyman, (D) South Carolina
