Listening Post installment
Chat Room Art
Story aired: Thursday, February 12, 2004

The internet is ubiquitous these days. People use it for research, to book travel, and to connect with others. But just how big is the internet, who's out there, and what are they talking about?

Millions of people worldwide send more than 3 billion email messages a day.

Hundreds of thousands of people are also "chatting" online, typing as fast as they can in tens of thousands of different forums.

It's a giant conversation and an overwhelming tide of data.

An art show opening in Cambridge, Massachusetts aims to transform this internet chat into something on an understandable, human Scale.

The project is a collaboration between an artist and a statistician.

Here and now producer Allan Coukell visited "The Listening Post." The exhibit debuts at MIT's List Center.
